To Jennym and Topsy,
Thanks both of you for your help, I dragged my husband to Haverhill yesterday because I wanted to see Keebles yard. I know its a bit morbid and it took us three hours to get there but I feel better for having done it. I know that my Grandmother, Annie, was born in Mill road and I saw the house which was wonderfull.
I hope to be able to read the trial records sometime as that would fill in a lot of the holes.
I never found the history room in Haverhill and I doubt that I will get back there any time soon but I will keep hunting.
Thanks again.
:-)

Hello Suey, my grandmother was related to Elliis Backler, her name was Alice May Backler daughter of Walter & Ann Backler. The children of Louisa & Ellis were in the workhouse 1901at the same time as my nan & her sister Ada. My nan never mentioned the murder to us I only found out when I started my research,I have read the trial records they are at Kew national archives. Ellis Backler ended his days in Broadmoor! I often wondered what happend to the poor children.I went to haverhill & saw Keebles Yard where the murder happend, also the history room in Haverhill has info & newspaper reports they are so helpful. Regards Jenny, hope to hear from you.

Hi Suey I cannot help but when I started my hunting for relations i stumbled on a website called "Curious Fox" I joined as a free member and read reams of names just to find a connection and then I posted a message highlighting all the Christian and Surnames I was searching for and the areas Counties etc. and I was lucky enough to be seen by a lady that has helped me a GREAT deal!! It is certainly worth a try and is a fascinating site! Please give it a go.....Miracles DO happen I can vouch for that as I had NO records except my parents mothers names! Good luck and God bles in your search! topsy x!

Hoping someone can help, I have just started to research my family history, just on the net for now as I don't have a huge amount of free time.
I know that I am a descendent of Ellis Backler and Louisa Mizon, their daughter Annie was my Dad's mother, she was just four when her mother died, she became a Nanny and traveled a bit, I know that she went to India, she married Frank Haggar from Hadleigh and they moved to a little village in Hampshire called Enham which was set up to aid disabled ex servicemen fro the first world war, in this village, (where I still live) they had one son Michael, my dad.
For his whole life my father never knew any thing about his grandparents, even their names because the family were so ashamed. I found out only two days ago, via this web site the family secret that I have always wondered about.
I have a copy of Ellis Backlers birth certificate and know that his parents were Charles Backler and Mary Spicer and have just ordered their marriage certificate to try and find who their fathers were but having read some of the posts on this message board especially from a lady called Kelly I am fairly certain that I have relatives on this site.
I would love to hear from anyone who is descended from one of Annie Backlers siblings, I know that my dad kept in touch with Renee, his cousin who was Arthur Mizons daughter but apart from that I think there was a rift in the family and I would love to know the names of any of my great aunts and uncles that I may not have.
Also if anyone has any information about the history of my Backler and Mizon ancestors that would be great.
Hope to hear from someone.
Susan :-)

Topsy yes it was great to find her. Poor thing left with three children to bring up on her own. Perhaps she had family to help her in Newcastle jd

JD oh so glad you seem to have found her... It always seems so sad when people are forgotten and it would be nice to think that when we are gone someone cared enough to look us up and think or wonder about us! topsy

topsy just wanted to mention my great-uncle Edward Lowes's wife Ada Walker. After he died I found that there was a birth of a Lowes in Newcastle upon Tyne 1917 maiden name Walker on births index. Perhaps that was Edward and Ada's child as the family Lowes originally came from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. And Ada may have gone back there when she lost her husband Edward Lowes. jd

Ann - wow! thank you very much indeed. I haven't been on this site since my last posting as I'm doing transcriptions for the Therfield.net site where there were also RUMBALLs (Penelope Rumball was my 4x g grandmother who married Samuel Motteram in Duffield Derbys 1785. That's another brickwall).
I had a MOTTRAM cousin named Barabara POLLEY! who worked on the brick wall for years before her death 4 years ago - we miss her help! There are also a lot! of Rumballs in the Longparish/Whitchurch area of Hampshire. Maybe we're all related at some point not too distant.
Have you found the James FERNSWORTH who was on the 1sst fleet out to Australia in 1791? He was transported for 7 years for stealing a bushel of wheat from a farmer in Wixoe but seemed to take to the life ok out there as he was able to buy his plot of land out there after his 7 years were up and settled there for the rest of his life. Maybe someone reading this in Australia is his descendent!

If it helps:
Thomas MASON & Hannah might well have had a son William Mason in Kedington -still working on that one - before moving to Sturmer. Their children in Sturmer were Thomas born in 1801, Ann born in 1804 and my 2x g grandfather James born in 1807. James married Elizabeth Scotcher (d/o William Scotcher the weaver - we have to get the right one as there were two in Haverhill at the same time - and Elizabeth Adams). Elizabeth was born 1804 in Haverhill. James Mason was buried in the cemetery in Haverhilll 26/6/1882 and Elizabeth 27/7/1882. They married in 1832 and had Fanny Mason in 1832/3 who died unmarried aged 36. Then Henery Walter Mason, then Thomas Albert Mason in 1840 who died possibly umnmarried aged 36!, Then my g grandmother Susan in 1844 who married Samuel King WINNY in 1868 in Haverhill, then Alice Mason in 1847 who married Richard TRICKER.
James & his brother Thomas Mason had the Mason borothers builders in Haverhill High Street and Samuel & Susan Winny had a grocers/drapers shop in the High Street (where Richard Tricker helped them).
Thanks again for all of your help with this. Where do you fit in and does that make us related in any way?

I found a site called Curious Fox and posted up a request for help and tonight I got the biggest shock when a lady sent me an email ia Cur.. Fox and she had all my family and dates etc and is going to dend me copies of entries! What a wonderful surprise it was and I would recommend this site to anyone in the same situation or similar. It is free to join and you can Pay an annual fee of £5 but i didn't and look what happened!! it is well worth a visit!
Jd has been such a help too and so have you all especiallly when I thought I was wasting my time so thank you anybody out there that helped with advice and encouragement ! Night all. topsy

Titch thank you so much for your help. I have been to their sites and not had a lot of luck. We are a long way from an LDS history centre i have looked and will keep trying! It just seems very odd that whereever I go when I have actual evidence it all comes up as nobody found!!! It makes one very cross! I have actual dates and place of birth for Great uncle Ernest and his wife but I cannot find his sister minnie although JD found a promising lead last night with a Minnie from Lavenham 5 years old on 1901 census but I cannot find her where she was supposed to have given birth to my Father in Forest Gate! She was living with her mother and I have tried all versions of her name and if I didn't have my dads b cert. and a passp ort i would think I had lost my marbles!! I won't give up!! but as JD says "tomorrow is another day".. Ta Titch. topsy

TOPSY: I reiterate what the others have said - The Mormon Church are very family orientated (aka LDS) and if you can find a church with family history centre they will be pleased to help your search and it's free (or by donation anyway). I've had the pleasure of renting our basement suite here for 4 years to young Mormon missionaries and have been to the local family centre, I found the people working there were only too willing to spend their own time on research. They were able to find some quite important information for me. My neighbour, who is heavily into genealogy, travelled to Salt Lake last year and spent a week doing research on her mother's side of the family. First Nations/French/American/Welsh heritage so quite complicated but however my friend came back home with loads of leads and continues to do research as we speak.

I remember once as a small child going harvesting and the wagon with all the stooks piled on it and gleaning the corn from the field, we used to chew it too. Must have been with the Basham cousins Margaret and Peter! It was a glorious sunny day and a joyful memory.

glad to help topsy, good hunting, hope you find interesting historys for some of your ancestors .so far we have found agrandfather who lived in the 1600s who was dutch and a surgeon ,he named one of his sons theophrastus.he had comunnication with isacc newton and some of his books are in libraries another one was russian who came here as a student and refused to return to russia in the 1600s and went to university here and became rector of woolley church where it is said that his flock referred to him as their russian prince but at the other end of the scale we found in an early census that we had a female who was a widow with children aged 4 &6 who were stone pickers(CLEARING STONES FROM FIELDS] how hard for children in those times, our children dont know how lucky they are

TOPSY LDS is LATTERDAY SAINTS CHURCH if there is one near you with a study centre you should find it in the telephone book you can find out then about booking a time and day to go in and use a fiche reader or a film reader to look up things you can also order film that is not usually there. You can find out more by asking when you phone or go Failing this maybe your local main library has fiche readers where they will have the IGI and CENSUS but you always need to prove the information from the IGI as it is not always correct. The IGI is on line, so are some Census.

Topsy you need to join the SUFFOLK FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY ,they have a site on here so if you put that in you will find all the information about joining, costs etc. this is how we had a relative contact us as when you join the names you are interested in are put in a leaflet that is sent to all members along with a quarterly magazine.if you find family members in other counties you will find they also have sites on the internet and to find them you just change the county name

Hallo Amber thank you for your posts. Is there a society that you know of for Haverhill and or Long Melford. Have loooked on web at Long Meford chuch and am trying to find the burial records. What is Ids church centre?. I will not be able to get to Haverhill or Long Melford so the internet is the only way for me I think. How do you buy these microfiche parish registers and a reader, I would imagine it is very expensive. Could probaly afford to go to one of the genealogy sites for a short while but you have to know which is the best one for England and there are so many a lot of which seem tobe for the U.S. I believe I spotted a Havehill History society on tis site and can I join as I can only participate online? As you can see this is all very new and confusing to me but I really want to try. Have found one of my Great Aunts I think, buried in Long Melford which looks very promising and also have to find a Lavenham cemetary Burial record as the Boydens seem to come from Lavenham. Oh well I will try again tomorrow .
I think the work that the transcribers do is fantastic. Keep it up you are very valuable to us all. It must be fascinating seeing all that history unfold before you.
Thank you again. Please keep in touch and I will post on msge board when I get somewhere. Notice I said when and not if! i am determined to find my family somehow. Topsy

forgot to say topsy that by joining a society from the area you are interested in you can get to meet new relatives we have made contact with fairly near and distant relatives.my daughter has had contact with one in holland but he has been unable to find our dutch g+++grdfather just wish we could find a russian one who could find our russian one but guess we all end up at brick walls that we will never be able to climb

Posted by amber at 0:35AM on 13th October, 2008. (81.106.xxx.xxx)

hello topsy we started off by putting down all we knew about the family then checked lt then spent many hours at the nearest lds church centre and local library then got a fiche reader joined some family history groups and purchased fiche of parish registers of parishes we were interested in then went to our record office to find info to enable us to get certificates to prove that the info was correct.i then got into transcribing from fiche parish records for family history societies though now i only do this for suffolk and while doing this i have been able to collect names that occur in my familyso that is why i can always give a helping hand to others with the same name.as im retired i have plenty of time to do this.
