From Neighbourhood watch: In early November an elderly resident in Long Stratton received a telephone call purporting to be from the local council telling him that a revaluation was being undertaken of council tax payments over the preceding 16 years and that he was due a refund. They attempted to have him confirm his bankcard details but he did not do so. He described the person who spoke to him as male with a very strong Welsh accent. They also said that documents would be sent to him through the post. They might well ask, again, for personal details. This is not the way councils approach their residents. Please pass the message on. SCAMS – there’s a lot out there some are true, some are false. I have just been looking at Haverhill TV ( Haverhill Memories) It seems very odd to me that there does not seem to be anyone on that video speaking the Suffolk accent I knew when I came to Haverhill in 1962. The local people spoke with a strong Suffolk accent. Very nice . A bit hard for us Londoners to understand as I suppose the local Haverhill people found it hard to understand some of the words we were saying . But the people on this video seem to be speaking in a plain ordinary accent . Except for the very old chap - and he seems not to be speaking in the Suffolk accent I remember. JD

ELLA. I wonder if "your " Boyden lady Harriet was related to my Boydens that originated from Long Melford..perhaps there is a connection.I would be delighted if there was as i have very little info about my family in Haverhill and Long Melford and Lavenham...If anyone recognises the Boyden name and has any clues PLEASE let me know on duff420@btinternet.com I will be eternally grateful for ANY info on Boydens,Bashams and Walker names circa 1800 - onwards. OR before!! My Boydens and bashams were from the Mount road and Meeting Walk area of Haverhill in the 1900 and prior to that Long Melford ,Lavenham and possibly any of the surrounding villages...Hope this rings a bell with someone..Thanks for reading this.

wanderer and wenger sorry to hear about harold sizer its a shame that some of the old names of haverhill are (dying out) you mentioned the accent of harold that is something else that is dying out rapidly as you know wenger that i have worked in bury st edmunds for the last 15 years and it seems every day i come home there is less haverhill accent and more foriegn by that i mean notherners southerners scots welsh irish and a few others not from england but we still have johnny and babara if i need a bit of old haverhill. wow a blast from the past i forgot all about Mick Wright he must be as old as Mick Jagger but sings better.

Thanks Wanderer....It was a while since I watched the Video, but I do remember now..I agree that there was really no need for his input to be subtitled..I understood everything he said..Was I correct in saying that he worked at gurteens, and sometime in hie early life did he go to Australia or somewhere like that? I also thought Jack Griggs was good as well. Regards Wenger

Wenger - Sorry to report Harold Sizer died last year. He lived into his nineties,I believe. His death is mentioned at the end of the video.
Must say I found it somewhat ironic, (if not somewhat amusing!),to find they found it necessary to 'sub-title' his authentic Haverhill accent !

Hi Jass...I was talking to colin a couple of weeks ago,he was telling me about Bob Judd he lost his wife last year and he was taken very ill whilst on holiday abroad...Talking of that video,I really enjoyed Mr Sizer....is he still alive,he used to work at gurteens with my dad..The weather here is getting cold temperature is only 4 degrees,It is light till about 7.30 as we don't change our clocks until november...Well I have to go,every Friday about a dozen of us Brits meet up at our local Pub..have a few Beers and shoot the you know what....We are all doing well hope you are as well...I thought Jacko looked really well when he was over here in August...The surgery really helped.... Talk soon Wenger

Hello Wenger, it's a small world, what a coincidence. We came to Suffolk when my 'better' half was transferred to Sudbury in 1990. That's a great story about the marmalade sign titch! I'm in Hundon and you can have a look at some pics if you want to on the village website - www.hundon-village.co.uk
