Hi Amber
Does the marriage record indicate the parents of Samuel Ship and Sarah Basham or any witnesses to the marriage?

Do you also have any baptism/birth records for either Samuel of Sarah?

Many thanks

Denise

hello Winny/Maon i too am looking for infomation on the Masons from Sturmer. My Grandmother was Laura Annie Mason she married my Grandad George Farrant, Laura was the daughter of George Mason and Mary Ann Ford both of Sturmer, George was born 1833 in Sturmer and his parents were William Mason and Rebecca Beavis in the 1851 census it has Kedington as Williams birth place , but I carnt find him as being born their or in the baptisms of Sturmer,Rebecca was born in Haverhill, I have looked at the Haverhill marriages just in case it stated who the parents were of the bride and groom but no luck there.(William and Rebecca married in haverhill).
If you can shed anymore light on this I would be very gratefull Lauraine

Does anyone known when Samuel Basham (c1806) married Sarah Basham (c1814). They are ancestors of my husband and I am trying to build our family tree. Samuel died in 1871 and Sarah in 1890.

Thanks

Message for AMBER, CAW & MO about John MASON of Sturmer.
Any chance he was a brother to my 2xgt grandfather James MASON & his siblings Ann, Thomas & possibly William & Hannah all born to Hannah FERNSWORTH & Thomas MASON? Although I'm wondering if there was another Thomas & Ann MASON in Sturmer at the same time, looking at the census returns.
AMBER, I'm still on the hunt for more information about Hannah FERNSWORTH & her parentage - possibly Fitzrandolph & Mary (maybe even Mary WALLACE)? Do you have records for Kedington that you could check for me please? I'd be most grateful.
IGI Batch numbers has Hannah christened 10/30/1782 to them C043715 but she'd have to be quite old for that baptism as she married Thomas MASON in 1794! It also has Hannah being christened 21/6/1766 there C037746 which I like much more as well as a few other children at the same time. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Maternal line: Kathleen May WINNY1882 (Haverhill), Susan MASON 1843 (Haverhill), Elizabeth SCOTCHER 1804 (Haverhill). Her mother probably Elizabeth ADAMS (married William SCOTCHER, a Haverhill Weaver at St. Mary's Haverhill 29/6/1784). Any information on any of these women & their families most gratefully received but I'm particularly looking for information about Elizabeth ADAMS. Was she the Elizabeth SCOTCHER buried aged 65 9/6/1822 at St. Mary's? Does anyone have any opportunity to look up St. Mary's marriages to see if there were any witnesses/parents named in the marriage lines of Elizabeth ADAMS & William SCOTCHER 29/6/1784 and also possible baptisms of ADAMS family members around the 1750s and 1760s in St. Mary's? Thank you very much indeed. Finally, how can I get to see St. Mary's Haverhill records online (preferably for free! - joke!)?

My wife was a Skilton. This family came from Kedington, living next door to the Head Inn at Dash End (aka Danish End). Anyone with anything about the Skiltons would be greatly appreciated. The family moved to East London and Romford around 1900, so any information would need to be from before that.

Sorry about that Philip. I've been researching my family history for 15 years now and it's been the most exciting of hobbies. I've just come to this site because I used to live in Haverhill in the '60s. So I can't help you with your enquiry but I'm sure you will get a reply from locals. I wish you luck in your research. Philip Maddocks: Camberwell?

Watchet, ENGLANDPosted by Philip Maddocks at 1:15PM on 12th January, 2008. (89.243.xxx.xxx)

My mistake!

She is 60 years old in 1851 Census so was born about 1791

Philip Maddocks

Watchet, ENGLANDPosted by Philip Maddocks at 12:00AM on 12th January, 2008. (89.243.xxx.xxx)

I have only just joined the list and I only have a small enquiry and hope that someone will be able to help. I have a distant relative Francis Maddocks living in Camberwell (then Surrey) on the 1851 Census with wife Charlotte born Steeple Bumstead 83 years old. That would mean she was born about 1768 ish. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might search for her?

Thanks

Hi,

Would just like to say a big "thank you" to all the people who responded to my posting re. the family tree and in particular regarding the mystery of the lost BACKLERS from Shipdham, Norfolk.
Information I received from William in Ireland (a Backler descendant) would 99.9% confirm that William Backler b. @ 1760 Shipdham and his wife Ann Rumbold, were the parents of 1. John 1781 2. Diana 1783. 3. Sophia 1786 4. Charlotte 1788 5. Charles 1791 6. William 1793.
It would appear that Diana, Sophia, Charles and William could not be found under Backler in the Norfolk parish registers, but that Diana, Sophia, Charles and William - children of William and Ann, have been found under the surname BATTLEDER.
The same christian names, years of birth and with parents shown as Ann and William all born in Shipdham, would suggest they are the same people, BACKLERS but with the name misspelt as BATTLEDER.
Relevant website is www.doun.org/transcriptions/index.hhp

Many thanks to all.

HUMPHRIES. Seeking information regarding SAMUEL HUMPHRIES (Born Haverhill c1842) - eldest son of JOSEPH HUMPHRIES (Born Steeple Bumpstead 1822 - shoemaker) and HARRIET HUMPHRIES (Born Haverhill 1822 - silk weaver). Address of Joseph in 1891 was 34/36 High Street, Haverhill. Is it possible that SAMUEL enlisted into 73rd Foot at Haverhill on 4 November 1859 giving name as Harry Samuel Humphries a silk weaver of Haverhill and father's name as 'Joseph'. Census in 1851 shows Samuel living at home and he is absent from 1861 census. Any help in establishing or contradicting this link much appreciated.

Hi Danny, I'm a newbie on here too. When I moved to Haverhill 1962-68 I had a doctor Burton. Any relation?

South Benfleet, EnglandPosted by DannyK at 2:26PM on 4th January, 2008. (212.119.xxx.xxx)

A newbie here, so hello to everyone.

I've joined up to see if I can make contact with anyone that may come from the Burton or Loveday family from the Haverhill area as below that would be interested in sharing information.

My main line comes Lucy Burton who was born in Haverhill in 1855, her parents were James Burton (c1833) and Emily Loveday (c1834) who are were also born within the area. Lucy's sibilings were Maryanne, Walter, Jessie, Esther, William and Oliver.

James' parents were Thomas Burton and Sarah Dean/Emily's were Thomas Loveday and Mary Osborne. The lines do go further back but this will do for starters :O)

If you think you are connected in so way please feel free to contact me at iidannyk@aol.com (the prefix is two letter I's rather than two number 1's)

Kindest Regards

Danny

To Sue Woollard, My husband is from Essex and some of his relatives were Pollards. In fact one uncle ran a shop in Collier Row, Romford I believe. My father-in-law worked there for a time before/after the war. If I can help more, get in touch - who knows there may be a link somewhere.

I accidentally discovered a June 2001 web posting by Michael Hickman. I am descended from the James WIFFING/WIFFEN who was born in Haverhill in 1785, but who moved to West Thurrock & Stifford and married Elizabeth GREEN. (Albeit by a child not mentioned by Mr Hickman.)
I will be delighted to give any possible relation details of my family tree by post. (I am using a Civil Service computer, and I do not want to abuse the privilege.) Please write to: 15 Linden Drive, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, CO15 4RA.

Hi, I would like to contact Ann Devon regarding her 5 x great grandparents Mary Willings and John Mynott, as they are also my 5 x great grandparents. If you read this Ann, please e-mail me (details below).

I also have Charlotte Backler b. 1788 Shipdlem, Norfolk married to John Pollard. This couple are my 3 x great grandparents.

I would like to know if this Charlotte is related to William Backler b. about 1792 Norfolk married to Mary Finch. William and Mary had a daughter - also called Charlotte - born in 1814 possibly in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire - who married twice; first to Abraham Woollard with whom she had 4 children between 1834 and 1842 and secondly to John Reynolds with whom she had another 4 children between 1848 and 1857.

I have over 3000 names on my tree with Genesreunited with some lines going back to the 1300's so cannot name them all here. However, The Marshes of West Wratting, Mynotts, Pollards, Gaults, Willings, Williams, Woollard, Clayden, are just a few from the small villages around Cambridgeshire/Suffolk/Essex borders. Many of these people moved to Lambeth, London around the late 1800's from their jobs as cordwainers (shoemakers), farm labourers, horse dealers etc. to work on the railways or in the printing trade, or as stonemasons, shopkeepers etc.

Anyone else who can solve the Backler mystery or have interest in the surnames I have provided, I would be pleased to hear from you.

My e-mail address is Sue@crowstone.co.uk

So many names ..... so little time!!

Hello

I am an Australian amateur genealogist who is researching a branch of her family with roots in Haverhill.

Sometime between the 1851 census and 1854, William Buttle and his wife Sophia, nee Whiting, came to South Australia with a number of their children, including their daughter Emma, born in about 1843. The 1851 census shows that William was an agricultural labourer.

Is there anyone out there who has an interest in or a connection with the Buttle or Whiting families?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Fiona Errington
