Hundreds of kids are on bikes around here but I think it should only be for the older children They all have skid lids on. But I find it difficult to just cross the roads here there is so much traffic whizzing by. We have a few cycle routes but simple not enough. The children and some adults cycle across the crossings when they are told to get off their bikes and walk across. Hope they all keep safe. 14 year old Boy was killed at Christmas crossing the road here.

That's great amber, it's good the children are getting out and about, I was only saying the other day that we used to have lots of children in the village playing field in summer, but more often than not it's empty now. That sounds nasty with the mosquito bites, hope you have more luck with the fish this time. All the sparrows must have come up here, I get loads in my garden! I've seen traces of the hedgehogs but haven't actually spotted them for a few nights.. Everywhere is so dry here. I love Devon, have cousins in n. Devon so visit often.

my hedgehogs have not been back,i fear for them with all the traffic about,i saw a squahed one in the village this week but was too far away to be the ones that visit my garden

eager to hear how the grandchildren got on today as the place that sells water equipment were giving free kayak lessons to kids today so that is where my daughter and boyfriend were taking them.boyfriend and friends have got two kayaks which they are keeping in daughters garage so when the adults are not using them the kids can.life seems to be very good and exciting for the kids now so hope all the unhappiness and problems can be consigned to the past.instead of sitting in front of the tele of playing on play station boyfriend has got them out doing things ,cycling along pathways across the marsh, swimming or body boarding or skimboarding down on the local beaches, they seem to be having so much fun it will be a wrench when they have to go back to school, but then they will have half term to look forward to when we are all off on holiday to north devon to a farm where they have a heated swimming pool

i have not seen any sparrows visiting my garden but my daughter over at christchurch has sparrows come to feed in her garden.saw a this years robin on the back fence it has not got its redbreast yet,i put some mealworms out there fot it but it has not been back yet.going to get some new fish when i go shopping on monday as i have hundreds of mosquito larva in the pond so they will soon clear them up for me,i don't want to help the mosquito population because if i get bitten by them i come up in huge bumps, twice i have been bitten on my eyelids and they have erupted so much i have not been able to see out of the eye and this has happened in seconds of being bitten.need to go out and pick the raspberries, well the ones the blackbirds have left for me as i expect they have had a great feast while i have been at the dentists.

If using a mobile phone while driving is against the law then does the same rule apply to cycling, as by doing so also presents a safety risk to yourself and other road users?

Lawless Cycling
Unlike with motor vehicles, few rules seem to apply to the cyclist; they are a law unto themselves. Cyclists riding drunk, without hands, wheeling other bikes alongside, with other passengers perched on the back, carry shopping on their handlebars are all not uncommon sights. The general rule seems to be if it is possible then do it. So it’s hardly surprising then that cyclists using a mobile phone while riding is a very common sight, and as such would barely raise an eyebrow.

Just like with all these cycling bad habits, it isn’t advisable, as you are putting yourself and others at risk, but you are not breaking the law.

Careless or Dangerous Cycling
If a member of the local constabulary spots you using a mobile phone while cycling then they may feel inclined to stop and caution you, but in places where biking is so commonplace and bad habits so widespread – such as bike-friendly European cities like Amsterdam, Berlin and Copenhagen – then it’s likely they’ll have better things to do.

However, if you are seen to be cycling particularly carelessly or dangerously whilst using a mobile phone – such as on a busy main road – then you do put yourself at risk of prosecution by the police.

With thousands already signed up, and many more interested in taking part, here is a short guide to how the scheme works.

Q: When does the scheme start? A: When you get enough loonies to cycle through the heaviest traffic on earth.......

A: London's cycle hire scheme begins operating at 0600 BST on 30 July. Beware

Q: Who can use it? The very brave or nutty

Those unexpected items and the feeling you're paying and doing all the work. Self-service checkouts are expanding throughout the UK, but many of us aren't happy with them. So why is the relationship so fraught?

Unexpected item in the bagging area? Totally expected feeling of rage pumping through your body? You're not alone.

New research suggests 48% of Britons think self-service checkouts are a nightmare, neither quick nor convenient. Quite the opposite in fact, and their complaints are all too familiar.

COMMON GRIPES
Don't scan items properly - 46%
Can't use own bags - 39%
Customer doing all the work - 13%
Always have to get help - 12%
Source: Fatcheese
Firstly, there's the bag struggle. Shoppers who follow the "bag for life" mantra may feel they aren't as welcome as they would expect. Self-service checkouts often don't recognise them and shoppers may even be charged for plastic bags they haven't used.

Then there's the barcode blindness the machines experience with maddening regularity. There's nearly always something they refuse to scan, leaving customers repeatedly swiping, running the risk of repetitive strain injury and feeling a pang of sympathy for those who do this for a living.

Amber are you there? I can't get asleep I just went downstairs and had a fag and a cup of tea. Just thinking about this and that. What's it all about? Will ET ever come to the rescue of the Human Race. Will we ever find the TOE Theory? Will the Time Machine ever be invented? Oh , my poor brain. I like gadgets but I think they can be a bit overpowering sometimes. My phone reads out the messages to me now that people send me. He talks very fast so i will have to slow him down a bit. He talks in one long jointed sentence. I got a text today and it went like this TEXTMASSAGEFROMISTERREESCODUPHONEPLEESEENDOFMASSAGE

Error it is not the function button you hold down but the button with the arrow on it NEXT to the function button Then you highlight the text you want to copy by pressing the top of the scroll button

Greenwich, UKPosted by jdedman at 8:17PM on 28th July, 2010. (94.246.xxx.xxx)

Hi amber yes it's good to have someone to sort this technology out for you. I've had this Nokia E63 for two months and could not work out how to copy and paste on it. I read the manual that came with it and read it from front to back but i could not find copy and paste. So I went into Youtube and saw a man demonstrating how to do it. You hold down the function key at the bottom left hand corner then highlight the writing you want to copy by using the scroll up button then appeareth the copy note on the screen you then press the select button and eh presto you have copied the text You do roughly the same for pasting

This Hotmail's getting beyond a joke. They have altered the page set-up. And still you cannot get rid of the recently emailed contact list like you can do with Google email and Yahoo email. And the junk email is ridiculous. I have 29 junk email in a couple of days on Hotmail. If I put in new settings EVERYTHING goes to junk. I think I will finally abandon Hotmail over this and keep to Gmail and Ymail where you can delete ALL contacts. When I put in the letter A into the To address box 50 email addresses pop up starting with A. Same with every other letter of the Alphabet. It has ended up with me sending email to the wrong people. Hotmail say they cannot remedy this.

You're quite right amber the world has changed It is sad but I suppose that is progress in a strange way The trust has gone out of society I will never forget just after Mum and Dad split up in 1958 my brother Tony got a good job as a chef in London And to cheer my mum and sister and me up he got a television in on hire purchase It cost £100 in those days and it took 2 years to pay for it, We stood around it marveling cos we had never had one before. But we never thought of anyone wanting to nick it. The thought never crossed our mind. We did not know anyone who had been burgled So we just enjoyed watching it. As for insurance the only insurance we had then was a few bob a week life insurance. I remember diving down to the paper shop with my sister to get the tv times. I was 10 years old then and we lived in a world without fear. No fear of burglars N fear of being shot down in crossfire by the drug gangs No fear of the loony IRA and Muslin terrorists. We had won the war and now lived in genteel poverty but were happy that we were at peace. My sister went to University and got her degree in art. Didn't have to worry about paying back loans. She got her grant. Tony continued getting on as a chef and I even though I was very nervous always got on at school and was happy. Looking back on it all it was really paradise compared to this rather nasty world we live in now. But that's progress for you. Everybody wants more and more they are under a lot of pressure and that is why we have these mass killings today Just read the most awful story of a young man killing his wife and baby daughters and then hanging himself It has become very frighting and tragic

Posted by amber at 11:37PM on 27th July, 2010. (81.106.xxx.xxx)

jd never giveinformation like bank details over the phone, all the official never ask for that sort of information over the phone.if they want to know anything important they will invite you into the office or send forms for you to fill in with their office address and deptment and you can check it all against the phone directory.its a sad world where you can't trust people anymore.you could go out for the day and leave your house unlocked but not today.because us older generation have lived in an honest society we are all vulnerable and crooks know it.if i work in the garden my house is locked up like fort knox as i have the bypass behind my back fence.i told my daughter to shut her windows in the roof as she lives in a chalet bungalow and if she had burglars in, neighbours would think it was window cleaners and it would invalidate her insurance policy if the windows were open

Greenwich, UKPosted by jdedman at 5:44PM on 27th July, 2010. (94.246.xxx.xxx)

Hi GS great advice I think the letter is genuine and the DWP just ask for certain details on the phone I suppose they would not ask for one's bank details etc. But it does make one wonder what they would do to speed things up a bit. And nowadays the Government are probably contracting Google to do their business. But I remember getting a phone call a few years ago from a Government Department and before I knew where I was I was telling them things I should not have been telling anybody on the phone. I suddenly stopped at the very important stuff. Sometimes when one gets a call they can gain your confidence Well they did mine that time anyway. I suppose it's just a matter of being on one's guard

Sudbury, U.K.Posted by GS at 5:07PM on 27th July, 2010. (88.111.xxx.xxx)

Good advice from various sources:
"Ask for the caller's name and department details and then terminate the call.

Find a legitimate contact number for the department either in a bill or other official documentation or a telephone directory. (Don't use a contact number provided by the caller).

Call the company and ask to speak to the original caller by name.
This strategy should effectively derail any scam attempts and also allow you to deal with the issue in the event that the call was actually legitimate. "
