Band to give a 'uniform' performance

Thursday, 8th March 2001.

HAVERHILL Silver Band has started a busy year of concerts and competitions resplendent in new uniforms.

The band is one of the oldest brass bands in the country, dating back to the 1850s, and has always been seen in its traditional maroon uniforms.

But now the band can be seen in smart new green uniforms, which were first worn in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh at an event at Downing College, Cambridge.

Last year, the band finally reached Championship Band status and this year it will be competing in the music world's equivalent of the Premier League, against the top 10 bands in the country.

The band meets for practice at Westfield School every Wednesday night under the leadership of musical director Charles Shipp and members travel from great distances to make music together.

The age range currently stretches from 12 years to more veteran performers and new members are always welcome.

The band is totally self-funded and always looking for sponsorship and people who want to be connected with it.

It is grateful to Herbert and Sons for sponsoring its last concert.

Its next concert will be at Haverhill Arts Centre at 8pm on April 29 and again on June 24.

It can also be heard on the Haverhill Bandstand on July 29 and for a Last Night of the Proms concert on Sunday September 23. Its main fundraiser for the year will be a Race Night at Castle Manor School on October 27.
