Car park charge increases in the pipeline

Wednesday, 10th November 2010.

Car parking charges for longer stays in Haverhill are likely to be going up soon, but a new concession will be a 30p pop-in rate in the Jubilee Walk car park.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is proposing to increase the charges by between 10p and 30p, and says it has to keep pace with the rising costs of maintaining the car parks and to take account of VAT going up from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent in January.

A report to the council's Haverhill Area Working Party meeting tomorrow, says the Tesco car park has had an effect in reducing the number of people parking for longer times in the Jubilee Walk and Meadows car parks.

It is therefore proposed to bring in a pop-in one-hour rate of 30p in these car parks to try to draw people back to the eastern end of the town.

The Leisure Centre car park will not have this rate available because people normally park there longer than one hour.

In all three car parks the four-hour rate, which remains the minimum at the Leisure Centre, would go up from 90p to £1, while over four hours would go up from £1.70 to £2.

Charges at Lower Downs Slade would be unaffected at 30p for up to an hour and 80p for up to three hours, while at the town hall/Arts Centre car park, the one-hour 30p rate remains the same, but over one hour would go up from £1.20 to £1.50.

Penalties would also be increased. The council expects the the changes would produce no increase in overall revenue.
