Celebrations as special measures status is lifted

By Martin Chapman on Friday, 22nd February 2002.

After two-and-a-half years of special measures, Castle Hill the label is now deemed “inappropriate” and has been lifted from the school to the delight of staff, students and parents.

After failing an inspection the school was placed on special measures and led to the school’s head teacher Jean Waite resign in a storm of protest from parents.

The announcement was released in a statement from Suffolk County Council’s Education Office. According to the statement it “reflected the impressive progress made at the school in the past few months.”

The decision by Ofsted has been attributed to the hard work of the new head teacher, Sally Holmes and her team of staff including Alison du Sautoy the chair of Governors.

The inspectors gave particularly praise to improved pupil behaviour, and high teaching standards, as well as more effective pupil learning.

Tom Scherb, Area education officer said the school was “defiantly on the up and up.”

He emphasised “this is great news for the school and for Haverhill. We were confident that recent improvements in the school would convince Her Majesty’s inspectors that the special measures was no longer appropriate.”

Mr Scherb was confident that the school “will not rest on its laurels but will continue to improve.”
