Christmas event spreads over the weekend

Friday, 11th December 2009.

Haverhill's major Christmas event takes place this weekend, organised and sponsored by Haverhill Town Council.

It begins with the traditional Family Christmas Night tonight but, for the first time, continues with seasonal events through the weekend.

Many shops will be open until 8.30pm and there will be festive entertainment in the streets, all leading up to the hugely popular firework finale.

More than 20 local charities and organisations will be holding stalls in High Street and Queen Street, and various local groups will be demonstrating their talents from Colette's Entertainment School dancing in the street to Haverhill Choral Society singing carols at Costa Coffee.

The bistro at Haverhill Arts Centre will be selling mulled wine and mince pies, and there will be a Christmas craft fayre taking place in the auditorium.

The firework spectacular takes place on the Recreation Ground in Camps Road at 8.15pm to round off the evening.

Other events during the weekend include an ice rink, a pop concert tomorrow night and a continental food market, with a concert from Haverhill Silver Band and Haverhill Youth and Community Band in the Arts Centre at 4pm on Sunday completing the line-up.

During events some roads in the town will be closed.

Closures today are as follows: High Street 2pm-11pm; Queen Street 10am-11pm; Swan Lane 4pm-11pm; Camps Road, Chauntry Road and Mill Road 6.30pm-9.30pm; Recreation Road 7.30pm-9.30pm.

Closures tomorrow are: High STreet 6am-6pm; Queen Street 7am-7pm; Camps Road (Peas Hill) 6pm-10pm.

On Sunday High Street will be closed from 7am-7pm.
