Christmas lights switch-on switched to Family Christmas Night

Monday, 18th November 2013.

Christmas lights designed by children from all seven Haverhill primary schools will form a key part of a new extended Christmas lights display in Haverhill town centre this year.

Haverhill Town Council took advantage of a special scheme called Creative Kids which gives communities a chance to input into the annual illuminations and so children from the town’s primary schools submitted simple Christmassy designs and one student from each school has had their sketch made into a simple but effective Christmas light.

Town clerk Will Austin said: “We are very grateful to all the schools for getting things sorted at short notice. The finished designs are great fun and will be put up on the lamp posts on Haverhill Market Square along with new lights decorating the trees near to St Mary’s Church.”

Haverhill Town Council is continuing to invest in the display and is extending it again after lighting up Queen's Square in 2012.

"We feel rightly proud of the lights in the town which are a match for many larger towns and form an important part in attracting people to the centre over the Christmas period."

In a change to previous years, the Christmas lights switch-on will form part of the annual Family Christmas Night on Friday, December 6. While the High Street and Queen Street lights will be on for the start of the celebrations, the lights on the tree and the Market Square will be switched on at 6.30pm by none other than Snow White herself!

Katie Bass, who will be playing Snow White in Haverhill Arts Centre’s pantomime, will be joined by students from the schools as their designs are lit up.

Event organiser Nick Keeble said: “We have been looking at ways to re-invigorate the evening and we are hoping that by having the lights at 6.30pm and the fireworks at 8pm more people will come down to the town earlier and stay around for longer than they have been in recent years.

“There will be the usual assortment of charity stalls, fairground rides, street entertainers and shops and businesses staying open for late night shopping but this year we have taken the theme of Lighting Up The Town.

The street entertainers will have a Christmas lights theme and then the evening will finish with our amazing fireworks finale lighting up the skies on the recreation ground at 8pm.”

The town council is also looking for a few more performers who sing/play acoustically or to backing tracks to provide entertainment during the evening.

Ideally this is suited to individual performers or duos. If you are interested, please contact Nick Keeble on 01440 712858 or e-mail nick.keeble@haverhill-tc.gov.uk
