Conservatives in full swing

Thursday, 13th May 1999.

LABOUR lost its fragile hold on St Edmundsbury Borough Council thanks to a decisive swing to the Conservatives.
The Conservatives are now the controlling party, with 23 of the Council’s 44 seats. The remaining 16 to Labour; two are Liberal Democrats and three are Independents.
Previously the council had 21 Labour councillors, 14 Conservatives, six Liberal Democrats and three independents.
Turnout was generally low, dipping to its lowest at just 16.7 per cent in the Clements ward in Haverhill.
Labour gained the most seats they have ever had in Haverhill itself, winning two from Liberal
Democrats but losing one to the Conservatives. Outgoing council leader Gerry Kiernan retained his seat in Haverhill’s Cangle ward.
A delighted Richard Spring, Conservative MP, said these were excellent results which local Conservatives planned to build on.
"This is only the beginning. We plan to turn this into a Tory town and this is the first step on that road.
"Haverhill can look ahead to a very dynamic and exciting future," Mr. Spring said.
