Council failure claims denied

Thursday, 25th April 2002.

The leader of Suffolk County Council has hit back at suggestions by Haverhill MP Richard Spring that is has failed to stand up to central Government discrimination.

Mr Spring had told his constituency AGM that Suffolk was consistently being discriminated against by a Government which is hostile to rural England.

He attacked the county council for raising Council Tax and failing to protest about poor allocations for health and policing.

Jane Hore, leader of Suffolk County Council, said it compared well to other authorities in terms of Council Tax levy and its pension fund position.

“There has been no failure of leadership in the county to fight discrimination against Suffolk’s residents.

“On the contrary, MORPs latest research demonstrated the vast majority (88 per cent) of Suffolk’s residents were very satisfied or fairly satisfied with the county as a place to live.

“We will continue to fight Suffolk’s corner with the Government on a wide range of issues where matters have not developed as we would have wanted, such as our grant from central government this year,” Coun Hore said.
