Deana's day at No. 10

By Deana Carlyon on Monday, 1st January 2001.

A couple of weeks ago I had to write a letter to Tony Blair in my English lesson. I only thought of it as schoolwork so I was really shocked when my English Mrs Loxton phoned my house and told me I had won a trip to 10 Downing Street to have tea with Cherrie Blair.
The following Thursday my mom and I met Debbie Spellman the reporter and the two other girls who had won it, Megan Williams and Michaela Butcher.
We travelled to London, along with the photographer, in a minibus. When we arrived at London, we had some photos taken outside Big Ben then went on to the House of Commons to meet our MP, Richard Spring.
I was really worried about meeting our local MP, but he was really nice. He gave us a tour around and told us some funny and interesting stories about The House of Commons. He also bought us all a souvenir.
From there we went to Downing Street. We had a tour around, and then went to the main dinning room. We were told there that Cherie had arrived late at the airport so she would be delayed. Because of this we had a tour around 11 and 12 as well. It was very interesting, all 3 of the houses were grand, but No.10 was definitely the best looked after, for instance one of the settees I sat on was worth 1 million pounds.
When we were in No. 12 we were told that Cherie was back and we could go back into No.10 to meet her.
When we arrived in the main dinning room we were surprised to see Tony Blair as well. It was weird meeting someone you’d seen so many times on telly, but I didn’t feel as nervous as I thought I was going to. We were also surprised when the nanny brought baby Leo in.
It was a really good day, and I will always remember it.

Deana's Letter to Mr. Blair :

Dear Mr Blair,
The reason I am writing this letter is to tell you how I feel about my growing town. I live in Haverhill, which used to be a small town., but recently people working in Camdridge are moving here, this means a lot of new houses are being built.

Even though I enjoy meeting new people and a few more shops have opened I am concerned about lack of facilities for children and teenagers in the area.

When I hear things about built up areas there is always a problem of teenagers turning to vandalism and petty crime, I think this is due to boredom.

I have been trying to think how you could help with this problem, and I thought maybe if you payed a visit to Haverhill more people would get involved, such as the local community and local businesses. Some businesses might even sponsor a youth club if they thought they had your support.

If there was a youth club it would be excellent for children and teenagers but it would also be good for parents because they wouldn't have to worry so much about where their children were. Even if there was only one youth club to start with, if that one went well we could think about opening some others.

I am proud of our town and hope people start to take notice now, instead of trying to think of a solution when it's too late.

Thank-you for taking time to read my letter,

Yours sincerely,
Deana Carlyon
