Documentary about town's first half marathon to be shown next month

A documentary showing how the concept of bringing a half marathon to Haverhill turned into an event that attracted more than 350 runners will be screened next month.
'Half Way There' will chronicle how HaverHalf and Haver10 grew from race director Jack Tappin’s initial concept of bringing a flagship athletics event to the town to the successful race on May 11 which raised thousands of pounds for St Nicholas Hospice Care.
The film was recorded by the team led by Ron Walker and Gary Pontin that made the Haverhill Man Alive documentary as a riposte to the BBC documentary about the town.
It will be shown at Haverhill Arts Centre on Sunday, June 29, at 4pm and 7pm, and is free to attend and watch.
It will include interviews with supporters and sponsors before the race, footage from the race day itself, and then analysis of how it went and plans for the future.
Following the screening the film will be released on YouTube and on DVD.
Matthew Hancock MP, Haverhill mayor Roger André, Stylize Display Graphics, Sanofi, Perform Sports Therapy, Realy Bodies Health and Fitness and Suffolk county councillors Tony Brown, Julian Flood and Anne Gower are all among the interviewees.
Race director Jack Tappin said: “When Ron first got in touch with me about making a documentary about the race I felt honoured, although at that stage a bit worried that we may not be getting many runners.
“We did all the pre-race interviews and as interest in the race grew it soon became apparent they were going to achieve their goal of chronicling the start of something special for Haverhill.
“We had great turnout on the day and HaverHalf and Haver10 have been so well supported both have hopefully been the start of what will become annual races for the town.
“I'm really glad the film crew were involved and am looking forward to seeing their finished film.
“It’s been a privilege to be a part of this and I have no doubt they will have captured the strong community spirit of Haverhill.”
