Exhibition of 1,000 years of Haverhill history opened

Friday, 7th January 2011.

An exhibition charting the history of Haverhill for the past 1,000 years has opened in the bistro of Haverhill Arts Centre.

Haverhill Local History Group have staged the exhibition, which is a repeat of the one the staged ten years ago for the Millennium by public request.

Group chairman Roy Brazier told members at the opening yesterday evening it had been one of their most popular exhibitions and people wanted to see it again.

Also on display at the opening were some parts of a large architects' model of the proposed town expansion developments made over 40 years ago, which the group had been given.

But Mr Brazier told people to take a good look at it now because it probably wouldn't be seen for another 20 years as there was nowhere to display it.

The group had also been given a tithe map of the town, but Mr Brazier said that would have to go into storage as well, because they had nowhere to display anything.

The group has a room in Haverhill Arts Centre, which is called Haverhill Local History Centre, and has just had its accreditation as a museum renewed, but Mr Brazier said the irony was that they had no museum space.

The exhibition was officially opened by Haverhill town, borough and county councillor Anne Gower, who is a member of the group.

She said the exhibition was 'absolutely wonderful'.

"I am proud to represent the interests of the heritage of this town, although sadly I cannot undo some things that have been done or replace some buildings that have been lost," she said.
