Historic vehicle rally to be hosted in town again

Friday, 28th June 2013.

The Town Hall Car Park will again be parked up with a fascinating and somewhat unusual collection of vehicles on Sunday, July 14, between 10am and 5pm as Haverhill plays host to the annual Historic Transport Rally.

Organised in conjunction with the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society (East Anglia), the event will see more than 150 vehicles of all shapes and sizes take over the entire expanse of the car park behind the Arts Centre, AXA and the shops along the High Street.

Vintage cars, lorries, vans, fire engines, military vehicles and busses will all be on display - with many rare and in pristine condition coming from far afield.

The Eastern National Preservation Society will be running a service around the town from the Town Hall Car Park every 30 minutes between 1pm and 4pm, including rides on old fashioned open top buses.

The Town Hall Car Park will be closed for the event and visitors will need to park in other town centre car parks.

At 11.30am more than 40 vehicles will leave on a road run taking in the villages of Sturmer, Baythorne End, Stoke by Clare, Clare and Chilton Street before travelling back on the A143 to Haverhill. At 4.30pm trophies will be awarded by town mayor Roger Andre

The Arts Centre will be open for drink and refreshments and will be screening archive footage in the auditorium throughout the day.

Will Austin, Haverhill town clerk, said: "I attended my first transport rally last year and was amazed at the number of vehicles and delighted by the support for the event. In a busy year it was certainly a highlight."

Mike Hickford, secretary of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with Haverhill Town Council on this project again.

"The hardstanding on the site gives us an advantage over other rallies where ground conditions can make it difficult for vehicles. We have some of the most important examples of particular vehicles attending from all parts of the country. This will be our biggest rally ever."
