Historic vehicles put on a stunning show

Monday, 12th July 2010.

There was a nostalgic brush with the past for hundreds of people who flocked to the second annual Haverhill Historic Transport Rally, held in the Arts Centre car park on Sunday.

Visitors hardly knew where to look next as over 100 old-fashioned vehicles, from fire engines to cars, and from buses to motor-bikes, filled both the Arts Centre and Cleales car parks.

There were also stalls and displays, while in the Arts Centre itself there were old films of vehicles in action, more stalls, and even a working Meccano model of the sort of diesel engine which used to ply Haverhill's railway line.

The rally was organised by East Anglia Area of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society, in conjunction with Haverhill Town Council, who sponsored it.

Many of the vehicles were pre-war, and they even included a Model T Ford.

Warm sunny weather guaranteed that the beautifully presented vehicles would sparkle at their best, many decked with old advertising slogans.

The buses offered free rides during the afternoon, with the open-top double decker being particularly popular.

A road run was held in the morning for a group of the vehicles, around Bartlow, Ashdon, Radwinter, Hempstead, Steeple Bumpstead, Stoke by Clare, Clare and Stradishall.

It was brilliant, thanks to everyone who organised and took part in it. I overheard a small boy saying to his Dad,'It's not a bit boring, is it?' so you can imagine the scenario in their house that morning!

Well done to everyone involved for another great display.
