Lottery cash funding for arts project

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 5th October 2000.

HAVERHILL is set to be the centre for a new technology project as the town council has been awarded a Lottery grant of more than £55,000.

The Eastern Arts Board has awarded the town council £55,880 for its Multi@rts project, one of the largest grants made in the Eastern Region.

It is the second major Lottery grant the town council has received, with £25,000 of Millennium Festival funding awarded for the Face of 2000 project that will finish at the end of this year.

The project will be run in collaboration with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and the Cangle Junction Centre in Haverhill.

The funding will go towards the establishment of a two-year post for a multimedia artist, together with buying the most up-to-date equipment for multimedia digital imaging, video-editing, soundtracks and web publishing.

Multi@rts will be based at Cangle Junction and Haverhill Arts Centre and the artist will work with local groups and organisations as well as running taster workshops and open access sessions.

Some of the resources will be mobile and many of the works created will be published on the internet via a multi@rts website.

The grant was welcomed by Coun Alan Smith, chairman of the Town Council Leisure Committee.

"This is very exciting for the town," he said.

"The town council is proud to receive its second Lottery grant and we can now offer innovative technological experiences to everyone regardless of age or computer know-how."

Caro Blount-Shah, arts development officer for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, helped prepare the successful bid and said the project would give people the chance to express themselves in new ways.

"Unique artworks, animation and radio programmes will be created, seen and heard by a wide audience through the internet site and exhibitions a the Arts Centre," Ms Blount-Shah said.

The multi media worker is due to be recruited next month and the first projects are due to begin in January 2001.

For more information about the project, call Nick Keeble at Haverhill Town Council on 761196.
