Mayors link up for big switch on

Thursday, 22nd November 2001.

LEGENDARY Lord Mayor of London Dick Whittington will join Haverhill Town Mayor Eric Bowman to turn on the town’s Christmas lights on Thursday. November 29.

Dick Whittington has agreed to take part in the celebrations, before returning to the town in January to take part in Centre Stage Company’s production of the same name at the Arts Centre.

Father Christmas will also be present at the switch on ceremony in the Market Square at 4:30pm.

New displays in Queen Street, the High Street and Swan Lane will be revealed and Haverhill Round Table will also attend. Mrs Holly Berry and her Christmas helpers will distribute magic, music, gifts and total hilarity.

The event is organised by Haverhill Town Council in association with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Haverhill Round Table. The town’s Christmas lights are funded by the borough and town councils, with sponsorship from Eastern contracting and local businesses.

Down the road at Clare, the Christmas switch-on will take place on Friday, November 30 at 6pm. A parade of children will be led by a piper to meet Father Christmas and his helpers on the Market Hill.

The Mayor of St Edmunsbury will help Santa turn on the lights, followed by entertainment from a magician and singing by Clare Middle School pupils and a disco.
