MP discusses possibility of Haverhill in Bloom

By Martin Chapman on Friday, 16th April 2004.

Haverhill MP Richard Spring will meet today with Councillor Michael Ames to look at getting Haverhill involved in Britain in Bloom. They will be discussing ways to get similar levels of support from the local councils as Bury St Edmunds receives.

Mr Spring heard about Cllr Ames idea and he is keen to discuss the ideas and thoughts to see how Haverhill could benefit visually from floral displays and other green exhibits.

Speaking today he said: “I agree with him that the town should be encouraged to participate and that assistance could be offered by the Council towards this.

However Mr Spring emphasised that it isn’t just all about hanging baskets, which have been a matter of debate recently in Bury. “It is, not merely a question of putting up a few hanging baskets. There is much more to Britain in Bloom.”

“It has been an extraordinarily successful scheme in other parts of the country. I want to see it extended to Haverhill so that we can all enjoy many months of foliage and flowers around the town”
