News snippets from Haverhill Town Council

Wednesday, 22nd September 2010.

A Haverhill Town Councillor urged the town's police chief to do more to catch people who put banners and bosters on Wratting Road footbridge.

Cllr Margaret Marks called on Insp Chris Galley, who was giving a report to Haverhill Town Council meeting last night, to make sure the items were removed and offenders caught.

Insp Galley admitted an offence could have been committed when items were placed there, and Cllr Marks said it made the entrance to the town look a mess.

"I see people doing it often so you and your officers must," shje said. "Prosecute them."

* Members put off considering areas for cuts in their buidget, in the light of likely reductions in grant from St Edmundsbury Borough Council for the Arts Centre.

Town clerk Gordon Mussett said there were four main alternatives: reduce or stop outside events; stop various grant-aiding; stop subsidising events and trips for pensioners; reduce opening times at Haverhill Arts Centre.

He warned members there would be very little time after their next meeting in November to make firm decisions.

* Haverhill Town Council has co-opted Alison Snape as a new member for Haverhill north ward, to replace Steve Bowes, who had resigned.

* Members of Haverhill Town Council heard the registration service available in Haverhill is likely to change soon.

Currently births and deaths can be registered in the town on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons, at the Burton Centre beside the libraray, an outstation of the registry office in Sudbury.

Town clerk Gordon Mussett read members va consultation letter from Suffolk County Council about a 'service modernisation'.

Under the proposed new arrangements Haverhill would still be an outstation, all day, but only on Thursdays.

What a sad life Councilor Marks must lead. I often see banners on the Wratting Road footbridge. They are usually inoffensive Birthday Congratulations and personally I find them entertaining and not in the least 'messy'. I also think the police have better things to do than waste time prosecuting people who just want a little fun celebrating loved ones birthdays. The word 'Killjoy' springs to mind.

I agree with Ceeceejaye. What harm does it do. I travel frequently into Haverhill that way and it has never crossed my mind as messy. It is done with love. I have never seen anything offensive there. What about all the boards advertising evenings at local pubs etc that are tied to lamposts or put up on the side of the road, or when the fair comes to town? I bet most of those shouldn't be there. Cllr Marks needs to get her priorities right as a councillor, I'm sure the police have a lot more pressing jobs to do than track down the friends and relatives of people celebrating 18th birthdays!
