Older people join up to their own uni

Thursday, 30th September 2010.

Young people from across Haverhill headed off to university this week, but at the other end of the age scale the new academic year was also beginning.

Haverhill branch of the University of the Third Age held a recruiting event at Haverhill Arts Centre on Tuesday, where the U3A's numerous groups were able to show people what they had to offer.

U3A is an opportunity for older, mostly retired, people to meet together and learn and develop a variety of interests or skills.

The Arts Centre auditorium was packed with members of a wide variety of groups, from art or crafts to gardening, walking, church 'crawling', creative writing, music appreciation and reading.

Visitors had the chance to sign up for groups, which mostly meet in members' homes, and join the hundreds of older people from Haverhill and around who have already found new interests and friends through U3A.
