Our town centre vision

By Martin Chapman on Friday, 22nd October 2004.

Residents and workers across Haverhill are being invited to help shape the future of the town centre by letting councillors know what they think of the new Haverhill masterplan.

The masterplan is being launched by St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Haverhill Area Working Party on Monday 1 November and sets out a vision for the town centre.

The idea is to create an attractive shopping environment, where business can thrive; where people can enjoy themselves; and an environment where people want to live.

The masterplan sets out proposed development of the town centre based on four key themes of environment, accessibility, attractions and the economy.

They want a local distinctive environment, with a safe and accessible town centre to all. They also want to improving the attractiveness of the town centre for everyone; and helping to bring about long-term sustainable growth of the local economy.

The Haverhill Area Working Party is a cross-party group of councillors looking at ways of improving the town. The group has decided to focus on the town centre by developing a masterplan, creating an overall vision. Once it's adopted, any new development in the town centre would need to fit in with the masterplan's themes. It will also help to prioritise the borough council's future spending in the town.

The working party chairman Cllr Jeff Stevens - who works in Haverhill - said:

"The masterplan is a vision for the future of Haverhill town centre. We want to tackle the problems experiences by those using the existing town centre and create opportunities for the future improvement of the town. This new plan marks the beginning of a new era for Haverhill. The town centre has the potential to grow and reclaim its share of the shopping market which is being lost to nearby towns. It can also become an exciting place in which to relax and socialise as well as work."

People throughout the town are being sent information about the masterplan and invited to send in their comments. There will also be displays in the Haverhill Arts Centre and St Edmundsbury's offices in Lower Downs Slade from 1-29 November where people will be able to make comments. Displays, attended by staff who will be able to answer questions and record comments, will also be staged at Samuel Ward Upper School on 6 November and at Castle Manor School on 20 November from 10am to 4pm.

The masterplan is also available on the council website www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk and comments can be made by email: masterplan@stedsbc.gov.uk or by post to Ian Poole, Planning Policy Manager, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, PO Box 122, St Edmundsbury House, Western Way, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3YS.

Responses need to be sent in by the end of November and a summary of responses will be made available early next year.
