Public’s views sought on conserving town

Thursday, 25th April 2002.

People are being asked for their views over plans to create two conservation areas in Haverhill

Christine Leveson and Claire Johnson, conservation officers for St. Edmundsbury Borough Council, will attend an exhibition at Haverhill Arts Centre on Monday from 5-Spin. They will have large-scale maps of the two proposed conservation areas and will answer questions.

The areas are in Hamlet Road and Queen Street. The conservation officers are especially keen to hear views on possible amendments.

These include whether the area around the Cangle Junction should be included, as well as the
Chauntry Road, Chainey Pieces and Recreation Road area, and terraces at Mount Road, Eden
Road, Duddery Road, Meeting Walk and Waveney Terrace.

A conservation area is one of special architectural or historic interest, where the character or
appearance should be preserved or enhanced.

The areas proposed are considered to be of distinctive character and have historic integrity, including listed properties and locally important buildings.

Conservation areas have greater planning restrictions but, as well -as protecting buildings, they can mean restoration grants are available.

People can also call the conservation officers at the council to discuss the proposal.
