Resident in battle over phone mast

Friday, 15th November 2002.

A MAN who believes a mobile phone mast erected near his home has made him and his neighbours ill, has vowed to continue his fight to get it removed.

Mark Wheal, of Conway Close, Haverhill, says he has suffered epileptic fits and been unable to work since the mast was put up overnight, without warning, close to his home.

MP Richard Spring has supported his battle to get the mast moved and said it should never have been erected so close to three schools and large numbers of residential properties.

Ray Nowak, Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, agreed to ask for the mast to be relocated in response to residents concerns, even though he believed there was no evidence of it posing any health risk.

Now Coun Nowak has received a response from T-Mobile about the mast, which was put up in January 2001.

"Having complied with all the planning requirements, and bearing in mind that this is part of a carefully configured network to meet customer demand, we do not intend to move this site.
