Stars-to-be of classical world flock to competition

The 23rd Haverhill Sinfonia Soloist Competition takes place on Saturday when musicians from across Europe will make their way to this corner of East Anglia.

What began as a modest competition is now a prestigious annual international event, which this year has attracted 164 entrants of 35 nationalities.

Twenty-five musicians have been selected to compete and will each perform a 20-minute programme of their own choice in a day of musical delights of the highest calibre.

Categories featured are baritone, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, horn, mezzo soprano, piano, saxophone, trombone & violin.

There are 38 prizes to the value of £9,125, plus 26 solo engagements throughout the UK.

The cCompetition is being held at Haverhill Arts Centre between 9.30am and 8pm and provides an opportunity for the audience to have some fun spotting the stars of tomorrow and comparing their choice with that of the panel.

The adjudicating panel will be Kevin Hill (music director, Haverhill Sinfonia), Caroline Palmer (professor of piano and chamber music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama) and Gary Ryan (assistant head of strings and professor of guitar, Royal College of Music).

All-day tickets, available at the door, cost only £4 (adult), £2 (concessions), or free (16 and under) and enable ticket holders to come and go as they please throughout the day. Box office telephone (01440) 714140.
