Top musicians from Europe to enter soloist competition

TOP MUSICIANS from around Europe and the UK will be travelling to Haverhill on
Saturday for the 12th Haverhill Sinfonia Soloist Competition.

What began as a modest competition has developed into a prestigious annual International event in music diaries, which has this this year attracted 123 entrants of 25 nationalities.

The 25 competitors selected are from France, Germany, Holland, Moldova and Switserland, as well as around the United Kingdom. Each will perform a 20 minute programme of their own choice, on violin, piano, flute, saxophone, soprano voice, oboe, viola, cello, guitar, trombone and tuba.

Prizes total1ing £2,320 are to be won, as well as 13 performance prizes, including for the winner, solo performances with Haverhill Sinfonia and City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra. There will also be solo recitals in Colchester, Glasgow, Haverhill, Louth, Skegness, Southend and Wisbech.

Kevin Hill, musical director of Haverhill Sinfonia, urged people to go along and enjoy a superb day of music making at Haverhill Arts Centre from 9.45am to 7.45pm.

“It will be an excellent opportunity for music-lovers to come and enjoy an event on their doorstep featuring top quality international performers.

“This event richly deserves to be well supported, as all the performers are highly talented.”

On the adjudicating panel will be Kevin Hill, William Bennett, of the English Chamber Orchestra, Brian Hawkins, of the Royal College of Music, and Susan McCulloch, international soloist and professor at the Guildhall School of Music.

All-day tickets will be available at the door priced at £2, £1 concessions, and enable holders to come and go as they please.
