Town “needs to clean up its image”

Thursday, 14th February 2002.

One quick fix solution to help improve Haverhill’s image would be to tidy up its growing litter problem, members of Haverhill Partnership Group have agreed,

At its meeting on Monday, members of the group looked at recommendations of the recent Social Impact Study commissioned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council to look at Haverhill’s future development.

Consultants compiling the report said there were some quick fix measures which could be taken to start improving the town’s image straight away.

Members of the partnership and will ask the borough council for information about street cleaning work in Haverhill.

Gerry Kiernan, partnership chairman, said one quick gain might be if they could change the fact that the town does not seem to be tidied up.

“Haverhill is a terribly untidy place in my opinion,” said Pat Rance, who works for West Suffolk College in Haverhill.

Mary Martin, a town and borough councillor, said the recreation ground was an absolute mess and in front of Sainsbury’s every hedge and bush was covered in carrier bags,
“It creates a terrible impression, perhaps it is something we need to get in touch with Sainsbury’s to deal with the problem.

Nick Keeble, leisure manager for Haverhill Town Council, said he walked across the recreation ground every day and found it “a disgraceful” state.

He said: “It seems to get worse. The bags at Sainsbury’s have been there for two weeks and I know they have been reported more than once.

“We need details of a programme of town centre street cleansing so that the partnership can see how often it is done and whether there is anyone on the ground to see what needs doing.”
