Town Hall transfer takes place

By Martin Chapman on Tuesday, 3rd August 2004.

The long awaited transfer of the Haverhill Arts Centre into the hands of its new trustees, Haverhill Town Council took place last week.

On Friday, members of both Haverhill Town and St Edmundsbury Borough Council signed documents confirming the agreement.

The centre which has been run by Haverhill Town Council for the past 15 months, has been awarded a grant of £100,000 immediately to cover the running of the centre.

The Town Hall was originally donated to the town in 1883 by the Gurten Family. Speaking last week, Haverhill Town Mayor Tim Marks said he was pleased the transfer had occurred.

“We are very pleased that the management of Haverhill Town Hall Arts Centre is now transferred to Haverhill Town Council acting as trustees for the residents of Haverhill, for whom the Town Hall was originally donated by the Gurteen Family in 1883. We are very fortunate to have this facility and I am sure it will continue to provide a wide variety of high quality entertainment under the new management".

Haverhill Town Council Clerk Gordon Mussett also said: "Haverhill Town Council looks forward to a future of partnership working with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, whose grant aid supports the Arts Centre, and without whose vision in 1994 the venue would not have been refurbished to provide these facilities."
