All set for town's big summer weekend

Friday, 2nd July 2010.

This is the big weekend of the summer in Haverhill, with the climax of the Haverhill Festival and The Haverhill Show.

The festival takes to the streets tomorrow (Saturday), while the show kicks off on the Recreation Ground and continues into its main events on Sunday.

Then the weekend concludes with The Last Night Of The Festival Proms concert in the Old Independent Church on Sunday evening.

Haverhill Street Festival returns tomorrow in the town centre with a rolling programme of free entertainment - and a large helping of silliness.

Look out for a gigantic bird of paradise, stilt walking pirates, juggling with the biggest balls you’ve ever seen, a game of tennis with one very posh umpire, slow motion replays and tantrums, plus a show in which the performers pack 25 shows into 25 minutes including a manic mixture of fire-eating, bed of nails, magic and escapology.

The Haverhill Street Festival takes place in the town centre between 11am and 3pm.

Meanwhile the show will feature many attractions on the Recreation Ground, including the chance to win a ride in a hot air balloon.

Although the main events are on Sunday, there will be the usual fairground attractions, side shows, trade stands and car boot sale on Saturday.

Sunday sees the traditional dog show and baby show and parade of vintage cars and motorbikes.

Events begin at 10am with an open air church service, while the baby show begins at 11am and the dog show at 11.30am.

The timetable for events and displays in the main arena is: 11am Colette's School of Dance; 11.30am Bikes and classic cars; 12noon Alison Sargent's School of Dance; 12.30pm Colette's School of Dance; 1pm Two-man tent show; 1.30pm Karate display; 3pm Fancy dress competition, crazy bike and games; 4pm Two-man tent show; 4.30pm Security dog demonstration.

Finally, Haverhill Operatic Society and Haverhill Silver Band join forces to give a rousing Last Night Of The Festival Proms at the Old Independent Church, starting at 7.30pm.

Expect hat-flinging, flag-waving favourites to wave the festival goodbye – until next year that is.

For tickets and further details about the concert go to www.haverhillartscentre.co.uk or call Haverhill Arts Centre box office on 01440 714140.
